May the Odds be Ever in your Favor
Bestselling young adult dystopian trilogy The Hunger Games will get a prequel novel from author Suzanne Collins. Though the title has yet to be announced, the book will be released on May 19, 2020. The prequel will take place 64 years before the events of the first book, on the morning of the reaping of the 10th Hunger Games. âThe reconstruction period ten years after the war, commonly referred to as the Dark Daysâas the country of Panem struggles back to its feetâprovides fertile ground for characters to grapple with these questions and thereby define their views of humanity,â Collins said in a news release. âSuzanne Collins is a master at combining brilliant storytelling, superb world building, breathtaking suspense, and social commentary,â said Ellie Berger, president, Scholastic Trade. âWe are absolutely thrilledâas both readers and publishersâto introduce the devoted fans of the series and a new audience to an entirely new perspective on this modern classic.â
The Hunger Games trilogy spawned a movie series, starring Jennifer Lawrence as heroine Katniss Everdeen, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, and Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne. The first three films set box office records, with the first movie earning the highest opening day and weekend of a non-sequel film. The film franchise has earned nearly $3 billion at the box office, and ushered in a wave of young adult dystopian film adaptations, such as the Maze Runner series and the Divergent trilogy.
Update: Lionsgate expressed interest in adapting Collinsâ upcoming Hunger Games prequel into a movie.
âAs the proud home of the Hunger Games movies, we can hardly wait for Suzanneâs next book to be published. Weâve been communicating with her during the writing process and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie,â Joe Drake, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement.
